Why your rating matters for search

Star ratings directly affect where you appear in Google Maps and local search.

📈

More Map Pack visibility

Businesses with 4.5 stars or higher and 50 or more reviews consistently outrank lower-rated competitors in the Google Map Pack.

👆

More clicks

Listings with 4.5 or higher receive significantly more clicks than those below 4.0, even when ranked in the same position.

📞

More calls and visits

Most people will not call or visit a business rated below 4.0 stars, regardless of how close or convenient it is.

Common questions about review ratings

How many 5-star reviews do I need to raise my rating?

It depends on your current rating and how many reviews you already have. The formula is: reviews needed equals your current review count multiplied by (your target rating minus your current rating), then divided by (5 minus your target rating). This calculator does the math for you instantly.

What rating do I need to appear in the Google Map Pack?

Google does not publish a minimum rating for the Map Pack, but businesses with 4.0 stars or higher and at least 10 reviews are far more competitive. In most markets, the top three spots are held by businesses with 4.5 or higher and 50 or more reviews.

How does Google calculate star ratings?

Google calculates your star rating as the straight average of all reviews on your Business Profile. Each review is weighted equally. To change your rating, you need new reviews that are higher than your current average. This is why the formula multiplies your review count by the difference between your target and current rating.

Does getting more reviews improve my local SEO?

Yes. Review quantity, rating, recency, and owner responses are all confirmed signals in Google's local ranking algorithm. More reviews – especially recent ones – help your business appear more prominently in local search results and Google Maps, independently of your overall rating.

How do I get more 5-star reviews fast?

The fastest method is to ask satisfied customers directly, either in person, by email, or by SMS shortly after a positive interaction. Send a direct link to your Google review page to remove friction. Businesses that ask consistently and promptly collect reviews at a much higher rate than those that do not ask at all.

Does this calculator work for Yelp and Facebook?

Yes. The math works the same way for any platform that uses a 1 to 5 star rating system. Enter your current stats from whichever platform you want to improve and the calculator gives you the same accurate result.
