If you have ever Googled yourself and seen your phone number splashed across random sites, you are not alone. According to a 2023 Pew Research Center report, 72 percent of Americans say they feel they have very little or no control over how companies use their data online. Your phone number is one of the most sensitive pieces of that data.
In this guide I will walk you through exactly how to remove your phone number from the internet, based on what I have done for myself and for clients at NewReputation. We will cover people search sites, Google, social media, apps, and some powerful tools that make this process faster.
Why your phone number is everywhere online
Before we remove it, it helps to understand how it got there in the first place.
Your phone number can leak online from:
- People search and data broker sites (Whitepages, Spokeo, BeenVerified, Intelius, Radaris, MyLife, etc.)
- Social media profiles and old posts
- Online accounts and apps that sell or share data
- Public records such as property records, voter registrations, or business filings
- Marketing lists from contests, lead forms, and “free quote” sites
Data brokers scrape and buy information from hundreds of sources, then resell it to marketers, background check services, and even scammers. One 2021 Duke University study found that a typical data broker record could include over 10 separate data points about a person, often including phone number and address.
The good news is that most of these sites provide an opt out process. It takes time and consistency, but it works.
Step 1: Search for your phone number
The first thing I do with any new client is map out where their phone number appears.
Go to Google
Type your number in quotes like this: “555-123-4567”
Repeat with different formats:
"555-123-4567""(555) 123-4567""555 123 4567""+1 555 123 4567"Check at least the first 5 pages of results
Create a simple tracking sheet (Google Sheets or Excel) with columns for:
- Website
- URL
- Opt out link
- Date you submitted the removal
- Status (submitted, pending, removed, needs follow up)
| Website | URL | Date | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whitepages | whitepages.com/… | Jan 15 | Removed |
| Spokeo | spokeo.com/… | Jan 15 | Removed |
| BeenVerified | beenverified.com/… | Jan 16 | Pending |
| Intelius | intelius.com/… | Jan 16 | Submitted |
| FastPeopleSearch | fastpeoplesearch.com/… | — | Needs follow up |
When I started doing this for myself I underestimated how many sites had my number. The first scan surfaced more than 30 different listings. Having a spreadsheet made it possible to work in small chunks and still keep track of progress.
Step 2: Remove your phone number from major people search sites
Most of the results you see will be from people search or “background check” sites. These are the biggest privacy offenders, so I remove them first.
Below are the opt out resources and a quick summary based on my experience. Processes change, so I always recommend checking their current policies on the official page.
1. Whitepages
Opt out page: https://www.whitepages.com/suppression_requests
You will need: The exact listing URL and a phone number for verification
Process:
- Find your listing on Whitepages and copy the URL
- Paste the URL into the suppression form
- Choose “This is me” and follow the prompts
- They call you with an automated code to verify
In my experience Whitepages removals usually take 24 to 48 hours once verified.
2. Spokeo
Opt out page: https://www.spokeo.com/optout
You will need: Listing URL and email address
Process:
- Search your name and find your listing that displays your phone number
- Copy the URL
- Paste it into the opt out form and provide your email
- Confirm via the email link they send you
I typically see Spokeo removals complete within a few days.
3. BeenVerified
Opt out page: https://www.beenverified.com/app/optout/search
You will need: Name, state, and email
Process:
- Search for your listing
- Choose the record that includes your phone number
- Submit an opt out request and verify via email
For myself and clients, BeenVerified has generally removed data within 7 to 10 days.
4. Intelius / US Search / PeopleLooker
These sites are often owned by the same parent companies and share opt out processes.
- Intelius opt out: https://www.intelius.com/opt-out
- PeopleLooker opt out: https://www.peoplelooker.com/f/optout/search
- US Search opt out: https://www.ussearch.com/opt-out/
Most require you to:
- Search for your record
- Select the correct listing
- Provide an email address
- Confirm via email
I usually see removals within 72 hours to 2 weeks, depending on the site.
5. Other popular data brokers
Here are additional sites that frequently list phone numbers, with their opt out pages:
I recommend working through 5 to 10 sites at a time so it does not feel overwhelming.
Step 3: Remove your number from social media and public profiles
Once I deal with data brokers, I turn to social platforms and any profiles that might be exposing my phone number.
Check these common places
Settings and privacy → Settings → Privacy → How people find and contact you
Limit who can look you up using the phone number you provided
Switch to a private account or remove your phone from the public contact options
Settings → Visibility → Who can see or download your email address and phone
Check your profile bio and any pinned tweets for phone numbers
Anywhere I find a phone number, I either delete it or replace it with a dedicated business number or web contact form.
Step 4: Opt out of data sharing with apps and services
A 2021 research project from ExpressVPN found that 82 percent of the top Android apps requested permission to access at least one sensitive piece of personal data, including phone numbers.
We cannot retroactively stop every data share, but we can reduce future exposure.
Here is what I do on my own devices and for privacy-conscious clients:
Step 5: Remove your phone number from Google search results
Even after you remove your number from a website, it may still appear in Google search results for a while. In some cases you can request that Google remove the result directly.
Use Google’s removal tools
Remove personal information: https://support.google.com/websearch/troubleshooter/9685456
Google allows removal requests for:
- Non-consensual explicit images
- Doxxing content (contact information published with malicious intent)
- Certain highly sensitive personal data such as bank account numbers and ID numbers
Google has also expanded removal options for personal contact information, including phone numbers, in some cases. When I have submitted requests that clearly involved doxxing, they were typically reviewed within a few days.
You will need to:
- Provide the search query you used
- Provide the URL of the page that shows your number
- Optionally provide a screenshot and explain why you want it removed
Keep in mind that if the content is still live on the original website, Google may only hide it from search results, not delete it from the web.
Step 6: Contact website owners directly when needed
Not every site has an easy opt out form. In those cases I contact the site owner.
Here is a simple template you can use, very similar to what I use for clients:
I am requesting the removal of my personal phone number from your website. The page is located at:
[URL]
The phone number is: [your number]. This is my personal contact information, and I did not consent to its publication. Having this number online exposes me to unwanted calls, spam, and potential harassment.
Please remove my phone number from your site at your earliest convenience and confirm once it has been done.
Thank you for your help,
[Your Name]
I keep all email records in case I need to escalate later or demonstrate that I have requested removal.
Step 7: Use professional removal services (optional)
If you do not have the time or patience to handle all this yourself, there are reputation and privacy services that will do it for you.
At NewReputation we have worked with individuals who had their numbers and addresses spread across 40 plus data broker sites. Manually, this can take several weekends. With automated tools and a dedicated team, we can often complete the first sweep within a week and then keep monitoring for reappearances.
There are also consumer-focused privacy services that specialize in:
- Bulk opt outs from dozens of data brokers
- Ongoing monitoring and automatic re-removals
- Reporting that shows where your data has been found and removed
If you decide to handle this yourself first and then bring in help, that is exactly what many people do. I often encourage clients to start with a DIY sweep so they understand the landscape, then use services to maintain their privacy over time.
How long does it take to remove your phone number from the internet
From my experience, most people see significant improvement within 2 to 4 weeks if they follow a structured process.
Typical timeline:
Submit removals to the major data brokers
Clean up your social media and profiles
Most data broker removals are processed
Google begins re-crawling and updating results
Straggler sites either remove your data or require follow up
You evaluate whether to use ongoing monitoring or a professional service
It is important to understand that you may never reach 0 percent exposure. New sites can pop up, and some companies are stubborn. The realistic goal is to make it much harder for anyone to find your personal number and to maintain that over time.
How to keep your phone number off the internet going forward
Once you have done the hard work of removing your phone number, you want to protect your progress.
Here are habits I follow personally and recommend to clients:
Final thoughts
Learning how to remove your phone number from the internet is one of the most practical privacy steps you can take. When I first went through this process myself, I was surprised both by how exposed my information was and by how much calmer I felt once those listings were gone.
You may not be able to erase every trace of your number online, but you can absolutely:
- Cut down the number of sites that expose you
- Reduce spam calls and text messages
- Make it harder for scammers and harassers to reach you
If you want a more hands off approach, we regularly help clients at NewReputation audit their online footprint, remove sensitive data like phone numbers, and set up ongoing monitoring so their information stays under control.
Start with a simple Google search of your own number today. The sooner you begin, the sooner you can take back control of your privacy.
